To strengthen the healthcare initiatives, Vedanta Aluminium recently collaborated with the District Health Department, Government of Odisha, under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, to boost screening and early detection of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Thalassemia in Kalahandi district. The initiative, which was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India in July 2023, aims to eliminate the disease as a public health concern by 2047 through early screening, genetic counselling, and treatment.

Vedanta Installs MHUs to Conduct Screening Drives

Vedanta Kalahandi, being a part of this initiative, has successfully installed its Mobile Health Units (MHUs) to conduct screening drives across Nakrundi, Talampadar, and Gunpur Gram Panchayats in Rampur block, among the most SCD-prone regions of Kalahandi. The individuals aged 0–40 years are screened using diagnostic kits provided by the District Health Department.

Vedanta Aluminium, established its presence in Kalahandi in 2003 by setting up Vedanta Bauxite Mines and an alumina refinery. This drive will enable early detection and timely medical care, which are important to save lives and improve health outcomes in these regions.

This recent collaboration reflects Vedanta Aluminium’s ongoing CSR commitment to improving rural healthcare. So far, the company has conducted more than 40 free medical camps across the Rayagada and Kalahandi districts. It has offered free medical advice, treatment, and medicines to the locals. The company also runs specialised eye check-up drives, partners with government programmes like Swarna Prashan, and continues to operate mobile health units that deliver essential services to remote communities.
